Sun Prairie approves data center moratorium
The Sun Prairie City Council has approved a 12-month moratorium on large data center developments exceeding 10,000 square feet. This pause will allow the city to develop comprehensive rules and regulations for future projects. The city also lacks the high-voltage transmission system infrastructure required for such large facilities.
The Sun Prairie City Council has enacted a 12-month moratorium on the development of large data centers within the city. Approved on Tuesday, the ordinance specifically prohibits the city from considering any new applications for data centers larger than 10,000 square feet.
City planning director Joshua Clements stated that the moratorium's purpose is to provide the city with sufficient time to formulate specific rules and regulations governing such projects. He noted that while there are no immediate plans for large data center facilities in Sun Prairie, the city also lacks the necessary 138- or 345-kilovolt transmission system required to power such significant developments.
