Community members voice concerns at data center town hall
San Antonio residents voiced concerns about noise, emissions, nighttime lighting and power reliability from expanding data centers at a community town hall. City officials are considering two proposals to regulate new facilities, including zoning limits, noise requirements and mandatory City Council votes, with a vote scheduled for October 29.
San Antonio officials and residents discussed the city’s growing data center industry at a town hall led in part by District 6 Councilman Rick Galvan. The city has nearly 90 data centers, and residents raised concerns about noise, emissions, nighttime lighting and the potential effects of power outages on nearby hospitals and other critical facilities.
The Development Services Department presented two regulatory proposals. One would automatically permit new data centers in designated zoning districts if they are at least 50 feet from homes, schools, daycares, assisted-living facilities and hospitals. The other would require City Council approval, public comment and compliance with noise restrictions. Community members and officials also called for a temporary moratorium before new rules are implemented. City Council was scheduled to vote on the proposals October 29.
