Aurora City Council is scheduled to vote on an ordinance that would bar data centers from mixed-use zoning areas, including locations near schools and assisted living facilities. The proposed rules would not apply retroactively to projects already moving through the city process, including the opposed Project Trident, while Mayor Mike Coffman says he will seek a vote to stop that project.

Aurora City Council is set to consider an ordinance tightening data center regulations by prohibiting them in mixed-use zoning districts. The districts include schools and assisted living facilities, but the measure would not affect projects already advancing through the city’s approval process.

Project Trident, a proposed data center near 48th Avenue, has become a major target of public opposition. Mayor Mike Coffman has said he intends to bring the project to a council vote despite the possibility of litigation and will encourage members to reject it. The council previously rejected a proposed data center moratorium after Coffman cast the tiebreaking vote against it, following public backlash over the city’s data center policy.
