Gov: City of Hermantown, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Hermantown City Council

Hermantown Mayor Wayne Boucher postponed a City Council vote on an environmental review for a Minnesota Power transmission line proposed to provide electricity to Google’s planned data center. The review cannot advance until questions about the city’s compliance with a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources shoreline standard are addressed.

Residents, including Solway Township resident Clarissa Ek, argued that Hermantown is violating its shoreline ordinance and state law. Boucher also questioned whether the city should approve a resolution referencing an ordinance that may not comply with those requirements. Officials did not say when corrective work would be completed or when the council would reconsider the resolution.
