John Perkins Recalled in Independence Data Center Vote

Voters in Independence, Missouri, have made history by recalling City Councilman John Perkins, who was removed from his First District seat due to his pivotal vote in favor of tax incentives for a massive data center project. Approximately 68% of voters supported Perkins' removal, making this the first time a city councilman in Independence, and potentially nationwide, has been recalled over a data center-related decision.

The controversy began in March after the City Council approved billions of dollars in tax incentives for the NA BSAI data center. Residents voiced strong opposition, with one voter stating, "We don't need that data center here. It's going to do more harm than it do good for anybody." Prior to the recall, an attempt to put the tax incentives to a public vote through a referendum petition was made, but the city did not certify it, leading a group to sue the city. Additionally, in April, two at-large district members who also voted for the data center were voted out in separate elections, signaling broader community discontent.

McKenna Cobb, who organized the recall petition, expressed pride in the community's efforts and voter turnout. Councilman Perkins, while acknowledging the outcome, questioned the recall process, particularly the low threshold for initiating a recall without a strong specific cause. He stated his intention to focus on the homeless population in Independence moving forward, but did not rule out running for office again in the future.
