At a recent Faribault County Board meeting, Planning and Zoning administrator Sara Hauskins provided an update on data centers, highlighting potential legislation for a statewide moratorium in Minnesota. This proposed moratorium, which would affect large-scale data centers defined as over 25,000 square feet with peak electrical loads approaching or exceeding 100 megawatts, would remain in place until the Public Utilities Commission completes a study on energy and water impacts.
Hauskins informed commissioners that the city of Eagan has already enacted a moratorium on data centers, and several other counties are exploring the possibility of implementing their own. She committed to keeping the board informed as further developments emerge.
The discussion occurred as part of a broader meeting agenda that included topics such as the Sheriff's Department receiving a Patriot Award, updates on the county's feedlot review, public works projects for county parks, and various administrative approvals.
