The Americus City Council convened to address growing community opposition to data center development in the Emporia area, which has expanded into Lyon County, Kansas. Residents and members of Emporia Neighbors United spoke at Americus City Hall, voicing concerns about the environmental impact, water, and power usage of high-impact data centers, as well as the loss of agricultural land.

Jay Vehige, founder of Emporia Neighbors United, urged the council to thoroughly research the issue before making a decision, highlighting the complexity of data center development. Anna Delong, an Emporia native, claimed a Gallup Poll indicated widespread opposition to data centers, suggesting it's even higher in rural areas. Delong expressed frustration that options like a ballot ordinance petition were reportedly unavailable to residents and stated her belief that data centers do not belong in rural or agricultural areas due to their permanent impact on farmland.

Prior to the meeting, the Americus City Council announced they would not vote on a resolution but would use the session to gather community input and educate themselves on the matter. Emporia Neighbors United presented a petition with almost 1,850 signatures requesting no high-impact data centers or battery energy storage facilities. Discussions on the data center's future are expected to continue, drawing more Lyon County citizens into the debate.
