U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), who is also the Republican nominee for Alabama Governor, is publicly advocating for increased data center development across Alabama. He believes that greater transparency and public education regarding data centers will lead to broader support among Alabamians. Tuberville emphasized the economic benefits, such as significant sales tax revenue and increased funding for local schools, while acknowledging past environmental concerns that he claims modern technology can mitigate.
Conversely, Tuberville has faced strong opposition from Democrats, including U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham), who have called for moratoriums on data center construction. This pushback has already manifested at the local level, with several Alabama cities, including Fort Payne, Cullman, Birmingham, Leeds, and Homewood, implementing pauses on new data center projects. Notably, the Cullman City Council recently voted unanimously to approve a one-year moratorium.
Tuberville dismisses criticism as "disinformation" spread by "woke EU climate activists and foreign adversaries like Russia and China." He highlights that Alabama already hosts over 20 data centers, some operating for 15 years, and states that new facilities would be required to use the latest technology to prevent environmental issues. He also indicated that as governor, he would be directly involved in negotiations to ensure fair deals for the state, implying a focus on maximizing local benefits and scrutinizing tax credits.
