City Rep. Acevedo hosting community meeting on Meta data center
El Paso City Representatives Josh Acevedo and Lily Limon are pushing for the cancellation of the city's agreement with Meta for a data center in Northeast El Paso. They introduced an item for discussion at City Council, despite concerns from the Mayor and city staff about potential litigation and financial burden on taxpayers.
El Paso City Representatives Josh Acevedo and Lily Limon recently hosted a community meeting to discuss the potential cancellation of the city's agreement with Meta regarding a data center project in Northeast El Paso. The representatives introduced an item for the upcoming City Council meeting that would direct the City Attorney and City Manager to initiate a process for canceling the contract, aiming to halt the data center's construction.
Mayor Renard Johnson and city staff have expressed concerns about the difficulty of canceling the contract, warning that potential litigation could impose a significant financial burden on taxpayers. However, Limon and Acevedo remain committed to pursuing a conversation between the city and Meta to terminate the project. Representative Acevedo acknowledged the challenges, stating, "this is a long battle. This is going to the courts... But if we don't try now and we don't try, we won't have a city like we do today."
The matter is scheduled for discussion at a City Council meeting, beginning at 9 AM at City Hall.
