Sherman Township approves twelve month moratorium on data centers
The Sherman Township Board unanimously approved a 12-month moratorium on data centers. This ordinance immediately suspends applications, permits, licenses, and construction for data centers within the township. The board aims to use this time to research and develop a revised zoning ordinance that specifically addresses data center regulations.
The Sherman Township Board unanimously voted to enact a 12-month moratorium on data centers during its June 3 meeting. The ordinance immediately halts the acceptance of applications, issuance of permits and licenses, and any construction related to data centers within the township.
According to the board, this temporary ban is considered to be in the "best interest of the public health, safety, and welfare." The moratorium provides the board with the necessary time to conduct research and formulate a revised zoning ordinance.
The current township ordinance lacks specific regulations for data centers, and the board intends to address this gap during the moratorium period. The board also retains the option to extend the moratorium for an additional 12 months before its initial expiration.
