Schuylkill County leaders are exploring the development of data centers on former coal mine lands, viewing these projects as a potential economic boon. Commissioner Larry Padora highlighted the historical parallel, suggesting that the region's coal industry could now responsibly power new data centers, providing jobs and stabilizing the county's tax base with an estimated $15 million annually. He emphasized the need for proper locations, adherence to stipulated rules and regulations regarding power generation, and no tax breaks, favoring development on scarred land over pristine areas.
However, residents voiced significant concerns during a commissioners meeting. Chris Melusky of Norwegian Township raised environmental worries regarding pollution, the decommissioning process, and potential contamination of local reservoirs, rivers, and streams. Melusky also opposed any tax breaks for data center developers. The discussion also touched upon ongoing issues with the BRADS Landfill near St. Clair, including persistent smells and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) violations. While commissioners stated the landfill is not currently expanding, it is purchasing leased property, and the DEP is working to address concerns through a new permit renewal. The county is actively working on a responsible infrastructure development plan to guide the data center proposals, two of which are currently on the table, including one in Kline Township.
