The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors convened on Monday, March 30, for a regular session that included a public hearing on Amendment 20 to Zoning Ordinance L, specifically addressing data centers. Board Chairperson Tom Clark, along with Supervisors Dennis Keatley and Dan Byrnes, oversaw the proceedings. Zoning Administrator Stephanie Runkle elaborated on the Planning and Zoning Commission's efforts to develop comprehensive standards and recommendations for both small-scale and large-scale data centers. These standards encompass critical factors such as appropriate setbacks, robust fire safety planning, and regulated proximity to other data centers and major transportation routes. Runkle clarified that the definition of "data center" for this ordinance includes all facilities engaged in data processing, cryptocurrency operations, or artificial intelligence. Following the discussion, the Supervisors officially closed the public hearing and subsequently approved the First Reading of Amendment 20. The Second Reading is scheduled for Monday, April 6, at 9:20 a.m., with the Third Reading set for Monday, April 13, at the same time.
