Nation's largest solar energy project breaks ground in Wilson
The Steel River Energy Center, set to be the nation's largest solar-and-storage project, has broken ground in Wilson, Arkansas. Backed by Google and developed by Cypress Creek Energy, the project will provide significant electricity to the local grid, supporting economic growth including new data centers. It emphasizes American manufacturing, utilizing U.S.-made steel and solar panels.
Cypress Creek Energy and Google have commenced construction on the first two phases of the Steel River Energy Center in Wilson, Arkansas. This project, slated to become the nation's largest solar energy and storage facility, is expected to deliver 1.6 GWdc of solar generation and 1.9 GWh of battery storage initially, expanding to 2.5 GWdc and 2.9 GWh upon full completion by 2029. The energy generated will be sufficient to power over 315,000 Arkansas homes annually.
Under a power purchase agreement, Google has secured energy from the initial phases, marking its largest solar and storage investment globally. Will Conkling, Google's Head of Data Center Energy, stated that the project strengthens Google's clean energy commitments in Arkansas, aiming to provide reliable, affordable, and clean energy for businesses and communities, including new data centers. Laura Landreaux, president and CEO of Entergy Arkansas, highlighted the project's role in meeting the state's increasing power demand and managing energy costs.
The Steel River Energy Center is located in Mississippi County, a leading steel-producing region, and champions American manufacturing by using 100% U.S.-made steel and solar panels. Suppliers like PACO Steel, U.S. Steel's Big River Steel, Nextpower, First Solar, and LG Energy Solution Vertech are providing domestically produced components. The project is projected to create approximately 700 construction jobs per phase and generate an estimated $300 million in local tax revenue.
In addition to economic benefits, Google and Cypress Creek are investing a combined $8 million in community funds. Google's $5 million commitment targets energy affordability initiatives for residents and schools, building on existing programs. Cypress Creek is contributing an additional $3 million, beginning with a $400,000 donation to Rivercrest School District for a new playground. These investments aim to support and create lasting benefits for Mississippi County communities.
