Jefferson County residents recently participated in the first of four public hearings to discuss proposed regulations for data centers in Louisville, Kentucky. The Louisville Planning Commission introduced new rules aimed at preventing utility rate increases, limiting loud generator testing, and prohibiting data center construction near schools or hospitals. The commission sought community feedback on these changes before making a recommendation to the Metro Council and several suburban cities with their own zoning regulations.
During the hearing, approximately 20 individuals shared their views, with only one speaking in favor of hyperscale data centers. Residents expressed strong opposition, stating they do not want to live near data centers and emphasizing that these facilities must demonstrate good neighbor behavior and carbon-neutral power generation before being welcomed into communities. The multiple public hearings represent a novel approach by the commission to allow broader community participation without requiring travel downtown.
