Tippecanoe County residents raise concerns over proposed data center regulations
Tippecanoe County residents raised concerns about proposed zoning regulations for large data centers during a public hearing. The proposed ordinance would replace temporary rules set to expire in November and addresses potential impacts on electricity demand, water use, the environment and nearby neighborhoods.
The Tippecanoe County Area Plan Commission held a public hearing in Lafayette on proposed zoning regulations for data centers and large data centers. The ordinance would replace temporary regulations adopted the previous year, which are scheduled to expire in November.
Residents questioned whether the proposed and existing rules would adequately protect surrounding communities from increased electricity demand, water consumption, environmental effects and infrastructure strain. Supporters cited potential economic investment and construction and technical-service jobs, while opponents pressed county officials to establish stronger safeguards and preserve local control before new projects are proposed.
