Owasso utility rates increasing 3%; City says inflation, repair costs driving change
The City of Owasso, Oklahoma, is increasing utility rates by 3% due to inflation and rising repair costs. City leaders clarified that the rate hike is not connected to a nearby data center, which is located within Tulsa city limits and does not impact Owasso's utility services.
The City of Owasso, Oklahoma, is implementing a 3% increase in utility prices, effective October 1. The decision has prompted inquiries from residents regarding the reasons behind the hike and how the additional funds will be utilized.
Roger Stevens, Owasso's Senior Director of Operations and Public Works Director, stated that the increase is primarily driven by inflation and escalating operational costs, including the rising expenses for repair materials for water, wastewater, storm water, and refuse infrastructure. Stevens also explained that Owasso purchases its water from the City of Tulsa, making Owasso's rates subject to Tulsa's adjustments.
Residents raised concerns about whether nearby data center developments were contributing to the utility rate increase. However, Stevens clarified that the data center in question is not within Owasso city limits and therefore has no bearing on Owasso's utility rate adjustments. He noted that the facility is located within the City of Tulsa and stated his understanding that it has not caused rate increases there either.
