Pekin city officials are urging developer Western Hospitality Partners to decide on a proposed data center project, which faces significant local opposition and requires a re-zoning of agricultural land. The city council has publicly expressed disapproval of the project, and any re-zoning request would involve public comment before a likely denial.

Pekin, Illinois officials are pressing Western Hospitality Partners (WHP) to make a definitive decision on its proposed data center project on the Lutticken Farm property. City Attorney Jim Vasselli stated during a Pekin City Council meeting that the city is pushing for a resolution amid changing national and regional data center circumstances, and significant local opposition.
The proposed 1,000-acre project site requires re-zoning from its current agricultural designation. WHP has offered $4.5 million for the 321-acre parcel. However, Pekin Mayor Mary Burress has indicated the city's reluctance to proceed, and a majority of the city council has publicly expressed opposition to the data center. Any re-zoning request would first go before the city's Zoning Board of Appeals for public comment and recommendation before a final decision by the City Council.
WHP has 11 months to complete its due diligence, but has not yet submitted a re-zoning application. Residents, including Dave Milam, who lives near the proposed site, voiced ongoing fears about the project, which Mayor Burress acknowledged. Council members urge patience as the process unfolds.
