Rep. Mike Levin (D-CA 49) recently promoted his "Energy Bills Relief Act" at the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation in Encinitas, California. The bill aims to address rising energy prices and promote renewable energy, which Levin asserts is the most reliable and low-cost power source. He emphasized that renewable energy prices are less affected by global conflicts, unlike oil and gas costs, which have been impacted by the war in Iran.
The proposed legislation seeks to reinstate tax credits for electric vehicles and home energy improvements, which were previously cut. Levin criticized the current administration for impeding clean energy projects while supporting fossil fuels. The bill also includes provisions to incentivize utility efficiency, prevent price gouging, and offer financial aid to families struggling with energy bills.
Of particular relevance, the package contains a component called the "Shield Act," which would mandate that facilities such as data centers bear the full cost of their electricity consumption, preventing these expenses from being passed on to consumers. Despite securing 120 Democratic co-sponsors, Levin acknowledged that the bill faces a challenging path to passage in the Republican-controlled House.
