The U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News, Virginia, has begun construction on the $49 million Jefferson Lab Data Center. This 30,000-square-foot facility will house the High Performance Data Facility for scientific research by various federal agencies and universities. It is expected to be operational by 2030, with the building ready for occupancy by 2028.
The U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News, Virginia, commenced construction in June on the $49 million Jefferson Lab Data Center. This 30,000-square-foot facility is designated to become the High Performance Data Facility (HPDF) for departmental researchers, as well as scientists from NASA, the National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. National Science Foundation, alongside university partners.
The HPDF, a federally supported initiative with an estimated overall project cost of $300 million to $500 million, is tailored for scientific workloads and data stewardship, distinguishing it from large-scale commercial data centers. The building is projected to be completed for occupancy by 2028 and is expected to create approximately 100 to 200 staff positions. The entire HPDF is anticipated to be fully operational by 2030.
