Bloomington council approves BPD drone docks, emergency shelter ordinance
Bloomington officials are considering draft regulations for hyperscale data centers, including daytime and nighttime noise limits and continuous monitoring. Resident Brian Kagel criticized the proposed rules and called for an outright ban, citing concerns about environmental impacts, vibrations, generators and cooling systems.
During a Bloomington City Council meeting, resident Brian Kagel criticized recently released draft regulations for hyperscale data centers and urged the city to prohibit such facilities rather than regulate them. He questioned the qualifications of the people who prepared the rules and raised concerns about environmental harm, generator and cooling-system vibrations, and noise.
City Manager Jeff Jurgens said the proposed regulations would establish day and night decibel limits and require continuous monitoring. He also said a hyperscale data center’s special-use permit could be revoked for violating city requirements. The meeting also covered approvals for police drone docks, a homelessness emergency ordinance and emergency-vehicle traffic signal equipment.
