Evergy says new data centers and other large electricity users in Kansas will pay premium rates and additional fees, amounting to about 20% more than ordinary commercial customers. The utility says the added revenue will benefit existing customers, and it has rejected dozens of proposed data centers that could not meet requirements such as providing collateral.

Evergy said new data centers in Kansas will be charged premium electricity rates and additional fees that are about 20% higher than standard commercial rates. The utility said the premium revenue will flow back to existing customers rather than remain with Evergy, helping reduce the impact of future rate increases.

The policy follows a Kansas law intended to prevent residential and small-business customers from subsidizing the infrastructure needs of large electricity users. Evergy also said it has declined dozens of data center proposals from developers unable to meet requirements, including collateral obligations.
