A recent meeting of the Preston County commissioners in Kingwood, West Virginia, saw significant community turnout as residents voiced strong opposition to potential data center developments. Nichole Larew, a community member, presented a petition with over 3,000 signatures, advocating for the repeal of West Virginia House Bill 2014, which she argues is unconstitutional and strips local governments of control over development. She highlighted environmental concerns, including landscape changes, increased noise, water impact, and potential effects on tourism, which is central to the county's economy. Larew also raised concerns about the lack of research on long-term impacts of data centers and the loss of local tax revenue due to the bill.
Commission President Hunter Thomas and Commissioner Samantha Stone acknowledged the community's concerns and universally opposed HB 2014 for removing local control, including zoning authority and local tax allocation.
