Lehigh County Open-Space Initiative Could Limit Data Center Development, Opinion Says
A guest opinion argues that Lehigh County Executive Joshua Siegel’s proposed Data Center Defense Fund and expanded open-space preservation could limit data center and warehouse development. The column also highlights public-health, environmental and economic benefits of preserving farmland and green space.
Former Northampton County Executive Lamont G. McClure argues that Lehigh County can use farmland preservation and a new open-space initiative proposed by County Executive Joshua Siegel to push back against data center and warehouse development. McClure says the county has limited authority over development because zoning and planning decisions are largely made at the municipal level, making land preservation one of its most effective tools.
The opinion column cites Northampton County’s preservation of more than 3,500 acres since 2006 as evidence that open-space programs can reduce development pressure. It also points to estimated benefits including improved air quality, water replenishment, flood protection, higher property values, agricultural activity and outdoor-recreation jobs. The article presents the Data Center Defense Fund as a relatively low-cost investment, but does not report a specific data center project, permit decision or completed government action beyond the initiative’s proposal and budget announcement.
