A massive hyperscale data center, potentially drawing up to 350 megawatts of power, is being considered for the town of Bow, New Hampshire. This revelation comes from Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) filings and an announcement by New Hampshire Consumer Advocate Donald Kreis. The proposal involves Eversource Energy conducting a preliminary study on grid connectivity for a project requested by Granite Shore Power, LLC, which owns the former Merrimack Station coal-fired power plant site in Bow.
New Hampshire Governor Kelly Ayotte has voiced strong opposition to the unbridled expansion of data centers, advocating for a statewide moratorium on their construction. She cited concerns about their large energy use, potential impacts on electricity rates, and other unforeseen environmental harms. Conversely, Bow Select Board Chairman Kip McDaniel expressed openness to such development, highlighting the significant property tax revenue data centers could generate for the town, which has actively positioned itself to attract developers.
While the study is an early-stage step in a potentially lengthy permitting process, it underscores a growing trend of data center development driven by AI's rapid expansion. Regional grid operator ISO-NE acknowledges that New England, though not yet a major hub, needs to prepare for accelerated data center growth.
