NextEra Energy announced a $66.8 billion acquisition of Dominion Energy, a strategic move to address the anticipated surge in electricity demand from the AI boom and data centers, especially in Northern Virginia's "Data Center Alley." The deal, which aims to create the world's largest regulated utility, is subject to approval from federal and state regulators.
NextEra Energy has announced a $66.8 billion acquisition of Dominion Energy, a strategic move to capitalize on the soaring electricity demand from the artificial intelligence sector and data centers across the U.S. This all-stock transaction aims to create the world's largest regulated utility by market value, expanding NextEra's operational footprint to approximately 10 million customer accounts and 110 gigawatts of generation capacity across Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
A key driver for this acquisition is Dominion Energy's significant presence in Northern Virginia's "Data Center Alley," a global hub for data center operations. Dominion currently supplies nearly 51 gigawatts of contracted data center capacity to major tech companies, including Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Meta, Equinix, and CoreWeave. The combined entity is expected to manage over 130 gigawatts of additional large-load opportunities, further consolidating NextEra's position in crucial AI infrastructure markets within the PJM Interconnection region, the nation's largest power grid.
The merger, one of the largest utility transactions in years, reflects a broader industry trend of consolidation driven by Wall Street's expectation that electricity providers will be major beneficiaries of the AI boom, as power demand rises for the first time in decades. The deal is subject to approval from federal and state regulators and is anticipated to close within 12 to 18 months. NextEra has also committed to providing $2.25 billion in customer bill credits across Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina post-completion.
