WEC Energy Group in talks with data center operator
WEC Energy Group is discussing a potential 400-megawatt hyperscale data center project with an unnamed operator. The company has not disclosed a location and is evaluating transmission capacity, available power and community support before proceeding.
WEC Energy Group said during an Oct. 29 earnings call that it is in talks with a data center operator about developing a new 400-megawatt hyperscale facility in Wisconsin. The project would be separate from existing data center developments in Mount Pleasant and Port Washington, and no proposed site has been made public.
CEO Scott Lauber said the company is weighing several factors, including transmission availability, electric capacity and whether the host community supports the development. The discussions come amid growing public opposition to large data center campuses, making local acceptance a key consideration for the project.
