The Pinellas Park City Council in Florida has enacted a one-year moratorium on data center developments within the city. This decision, made at its August 11 meeting, aims to provide the city with time to conduct thorough due diligence regarding the potential impacts of data centers on the community.

The moratorium follows a proposal by American Tower Corp. for a 17,000-square-foot data center in Pinellas Park. The city, located in densely populated Pinellas County, wants to study concerns related to water and electricity usage, noise, and land-use impacts, which are common issues associated with the influx of AI data centers.

This move by Pinellas Park aligns with a broader trend, as more than 180 jurisdictions across the U.S. have approved similar moratoriums, according to Interconnected Capital LLC. While AI data centers offer potential tax revenue, they also raise environmental and infrastructure concerns, especially in states like Florida, which historically faces challenges with hurricanes and tropical storms impacting data center viability.
