The Louisville Metro Council Planning & Zoning Committee voted 7-1 on Tuesday to approve a 180-day moratorium on new hyperscale data centers. The proposal, championed by Councilwoman Dr. Paula McCraney, will now move to the full Metro Council for final consideration.
Councilwoman McCraney stated that the moratorium is not anti-technology but aims for "responsible governance," providing an opportunity to review and update Louisville's Land Development Code. The six-month pause is intended to allow council members to study the complex impacts of these facilities, including their high energy and water demands, infrastructure requirements, economic potential, tax implications, and noise pollution for nearby neighborhoods.
The decision follows increasing community concern in Louisville regarding proposed data center regulations and their potential local and environmental footprints. During the moratorium period, the Metro Council plans to collaborate with utility providers, environmental experts, and local residents to draft updated zoning laws specifically for future data center facilities.
