NC Attorney General Jackson calls Duke Energy's data center tariff 'massive step forward'
Duke Energy has reached an agreement with data center developers on a special electricity rate intended to make large users pay more of the costs of serving them. North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson and Gov. Josh Stein support the concept but are seeking greater transparency and assurances that data centers cover required infrastructure upgrades before regulators approve the rates.
Duke Energy reached an agreement with data center developers on a special tariff designed to shift more of the costs associated with serving large electricity users onto those customers. North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson called the deal a “massive step forward” for ensuring data centers pay their fair share.
Jackson and Gov. Josh Stein said the proposal still requires additional transparency, accountability and protections for other ratepayers. The North Carolina Utilities Commission must approve the rates before they can take effect, and the public can submit comments on the related docket.
