The demonstration followed a 5-1 vote by the Statesboro Planning Commission to approve a rezoning amendment for a 26.5-acre site on Burkhalter Road, changing its designation from residential to allow for the two-story facility.
Organizer William McDaniel initiated the call to action on social media, expressing surprise and gratitude for the turnout. Protesters voiced concerns over potential noise, air pollution, water usage, and impacts on wildlife. Brooke Jarrett, a Statesboro native, also highlighted the broad community concern, noting similar issues in Effingham County where she now resides.
Representatives for 4AM Development previously addressed some environmental claims during the planning commission meeting, stating that experts have worked to mitigate impacts. McDaniel indicated that the group intends to maintain their vocal opposition in anticipation of the Statesboro City Council's final vote, scheduled for August 18, which will also include public feedback.
