Augusta Township voters in Michigan overwhelmingly rejected a rezoning proposal for a hyperscale data center by a nearly 9-to-1 margin. This significant outcome was the result of a grassroots effort by a group of residents, Protect Augusta Charter Township, who gathered over 1,500 signatures to force a public vote on the issue. The proposed data center development was planned for more than 500 acres near Milan.

Wendy Albers, a founder of Protect Augusta Charter Township and a member of the Augusta Township Planning Commission, stated that the campaign was primarily fueled by the residents' belief that township leaders were not listening to their concerns. Residents like Tim and Tamie Bruneau, who live near an existing data center in Saline Township, voiced worries about potential impacts on well water, air quality, and the rural character of their community, emphasizing the need for their concerns to be fully heard before irreversible decisions are made.
