Water Authority Addresses Questions About Google Data Center Water Usage
The Western Virginia Water Authority addressed public concerns regarding the water usage of a Google data center under construction in Botetourt County. An agreement is in place for Google to use up to 2 million gallons of water per day, with a potential increase to 8 million gallons per day if certain conditions are met.
The Western Virginia Water Authority (WVWA) hosted Laura Schirmer in their studio to address community concerns regarding the water consumption of a Google data center under construction in Botetourt County.
Schirmer explained that extensive studies were conducted on water supply, treatment capacity, and drought resilience before an agreement was reached. The WVWA has a legally binding agreement to provide Google with up to 2 million gallons of water per day. The agreement also allows Google to request an additional 6 million gallons, totaling 8 million gallons daily for the campus, but this increase is contingent on the WVWA board's approval and the availability of sufficient water supply and infrastructure. There is no guarantee for the additional 6 million gallons. Many viewers expressed concerns about being asked to conserve water during a drought while a new data center is permitted to use substantial amounts.
