Mississippi residents sue xAI over data center noise in Southaven

Residents in Southaven, Mississippi, have filed a class-action lawsuit against Elon Musk's xAI, citing "near-constant noise" and vibrations emanating from the company's data centers in De Soto County. The lawsuit, filed by three residents, alleges that xAI's operation of gas turbines to power its facilities has created a pervasive and inescapable nuisance, likening the sound to a jet engine. According to the complaint, the number of turbines at the Southaven site has dramatically increased from three to 57 in less than a year, with permits already obtained for 41 additional units, bringing the total to nearly 100.

This legal action follows a separate lawsuit filed by the NAACP, which aims to halt unpermitted air pollution from an "illegal power plant" at the same Colossus 2 data center location. Critics highlight that these methane-burning turbines are a significant source of pollution.
