The Massillon, Ohio City Council voted to extend its existing ban on data center development for an additional 60 days, moving its expiration to late August. The initial ban was set to expire on Tuesday.
Mayor Jamie Slutz stated to WHBC News that he has not personally engaged with data center developers, though general discussions are occurring regarding potential sites such as the former Republic Steel location and the Massillon Technology and Energy Park. He also clarified that the ban is not intended to be permanent and private entities are free to negotiate future data center projects within the city. Slutz suggested utilizing treated water from the city's wastewater treatment plant, located across the Tuscarawas River, to address the significant water demands typically associated with data center cooling in the technology park. The Mayor acknowledged the inevitability of data center development, highlighting their potential to create jobs and generate revenue for the city.
