The Volusia County Council unanimously advanced a proposed ordinance that would ban large-scale data centers in unincorporated areas, citing water use, sinkholes, public safety and environmental concerns. The ordinance still requires review by the Planning and Land Development Regulation Commission and a second, final hearing before it can take effect.

The Volusia County Council in Florida voted unanimously to advance a proposed ban on large-scale data centers in unincorporated areas. The ordinance would prevent the county from reviewing or approving applications, permits, amendments or construction related to such facilities, with supporters citing potential water consumption, sinkholes, public safety and broader environmental and health impacts.

Council Member Troy Kent said he supported the proposal, while Chair Jeff Brower said the measure was intended to keep data centers out of Volusia County rather than oppose the technology generally. The proposal is scheduled for review by the Planning and Land Development Regulation Commission on Oct. 15 and a final hearing before the council on Oct. 20; if approved, it would take effect after filing with the Florida Department of State.
