AI Data Center Moratorium Introduced by Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) are introducing federal legislation aimed at imposing a moratorium on the construction of new artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. The proposed bill, set to be introduced Wednesday, seeks to halt development until comprehensive national safeguards are established. The lawmakers’ initiative stems from growing concerns across the nation regarding the rapid expansion of AI technology and its infrastructure. Communities have expressed apprehension about the potential impacts of data centers on consumer energy costs, water supplies, and broader environmental effects, as well as the technology's implications for civil rights and the workforce. According to Sanders' office, the legislation's objective is to ensure that these technologies do not harm workers, consumers, communities, privacy, or civil rights, and do not negatively affect the environment before further AI data center development proceeds.
