Permits totaling $40 million were recently issued for a new artificial intelligence data center in Birmingham, Alabama, marking a significant step in its development. Hoar Construction secured three permits for the planned 300-megawatt facility, which will be operated by Nebius Group N.V. of Amsterdam.
The data center is slated for the site of the former Regions Lakeshore Operations Center at 201 Milan Parkway in Birmingham's Oxmoor Corporate Park. It is designed to support advanced AI workloads and high-performance computing systems, with officials anticipating the creation of approximately 100 jobs.
This development follows a demolition permit awarded in January 2026 and initial construction permits granted in April. The permits for the Nebius project were among 24 new building permits for projects exceeding $1 million issued statewide last week.
