The initiative secures commitments from major utilities, including NextEra and Duke Energy, and tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, OpenAI, and Amazon, to cover their own power consumption expenses.
The pledge, now encompassing 80% of U.S. power delivery, is intended to position data centers as "engines of growth for local communities" while preserving America's leadership in the AI sector, according to White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers. This development comes as states like New York have implemented moratoriums on new data center construction amidst concerns over electricity demand and associated costs.
A non-binding agreement, the pledge also grants participating tech companies the flexibility to construct their own power generation facilities and negotiate electricity rates directly with utilities and state authorities.
