LP&L plans infrastructure for growth; outlines role in data center discussions

LP&L clarified its role in discussions with data center developers, stating that these companies must undertake studies and secure state approvals from entities like ERCOT and the Public Utility Commission, bearing all associated costs.
Lubbock Power & Light (LP&L) is proactively planning infrastructure improvements, including a new transmission line on the West Loop, primarily to meet current customer demands and support existing growth. LP&L spokesperson Matt Rose clarified that these plans are not solely to accommodate potential data center developments in the "Hub City" (Lubbock).
Rose explained LP&L's role in the process for data center developers looking to establish operations in the area. He stated that these companies would first need to fund a study with LP&L at their own expense to determine necessary infrastructure. Following this, they would seek state approvals from bodies such as ERCOT and the Public Utility Commission.
LP&L emphasized that it has an obligation to serve once all government approvals are met, but data center companies would be required to pay upfront for their infrastructure. This ensures that existing LP&L customers are "held harmless" and do not bear the cost of the significant power needs of data centers. Rose indicated that many large industrial or manufacturing customers, including data centers, explore locating in Lubbock but many never finalize plans.
