The Elkhart City Council officially passed a one-year moratorium on data centers and battery storage facilities during a special hearing on Thursday, August 27. The measure, which suspends new applications for these types of facilities, will remain in effect through December 31, 2027.
Elkhart's 1st District city councilman, Aaron Mishler, stated that the moratorium serves as a protective measure for the community while the city investigates the long-term suitability of data centers. He emphasized that the one-year pause grants the necessary time and ability for this assessment. It was clarified that this moratorium applies exclusively to the city of Elkhart and does not extend to the surrounding county.
