Ohio Congressman Discusses Opposition to OpenAI and Nvidia Data Center, Cites Chinese Propaganda

Ohio Congressman Michael Rulli, a member of the House Energy Committee, appeared on Fox Business Network's "Mornings with Maria" to discuss significant public opposition to a proposed $500 billion data center project by OpenAI and Nvidia in Ohio. Rulli claimed that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has "infiltrated Ohio with propaganda" to fuel this sentiment against the development.
The Congressman acknowledged that most of his constituents oppose data centers, citing fears about rising temperatures, potential health issues, destruction of agricultural land, and proximity to neighborhoods. He urged for greater public education on data center operations, including distinctions between "front of the meter" (cost to public) and "behind the meter" (company pays) power sourcing, and whether facilities utilize self-contained or city water systems.
Rulli stressed the importance of strategic placement, advocating for data centers on brownfields or old industrial sites rather than cornfields. While recognizing the benefits of AI in areas like cancer research, cybersecurity, and drone technology, he highlighted the need for improved development practices to alleviate public concerns. He also suggested a potential congressional vote on data center-related issues, noting that it has become a top subject among lawmakers.
