Phoenix steps up pressure on data center construction
Phoenix is assigning early-morning inspectors to Menlo Digital's Ahwatukee data center construction site after months of resident complaints about noise, lighting and construction-hour violations. The contractor has agreed to move traffic and parking, restrict deliveries, install sound meters and take other steps to reduce disturbances, while residents continue protesting the project.
Phoenix is increasing oversight of construction at Menlo Digital's million-square-foot data center campus in Ahwatukee after nearby residents complained about early-morning noise, bright lights and vehicle activity. Assistant Planning and Development Director Mike Baxley said city inspectors would monitor the site during early hours, while the contractor agreed to move the construction entrance, restrict deliveries, relocate parking and offices, and install sound meters.
The city is investigating complaints from several dates but has not determined whether violations occurred. The project continues to face opposition from residents and the Ahwatukee Community Alliance, whose president, Craig Evans, criticized the city's response. Separately, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes scheduled a town hall in Mesa to hear broader community concerns about data centers, including issues involving noise, electricity use and environmental and health impacts.
