The Kalamazoo City Commission unanimously voted to approve a temporary moratorium on new data center applications during a late-night session. This decision was a direct response to a multitude of land use compatibility and environmental concerns expressed by the public, which included issues like noise, vibrations, harmful decibel levels, lighting, excessive reliance on diesel generators, water usage, wastewater discharge, emergency fire response, and high greenhouse gas emissions.

The resolution enacts a temporary pause on accepting or processing applications for data centers, battery storage systems, crypto mining centers, and artificial intelligence data centers within the city limits. This measure will be active until August 16, 2027. Commissioners also indicated interest in a separate moratorium from the planning commission to facilitate a comprehensive review of existing zoning regulations to better address data center development in the future.

The discussion was informed by commissioners who had visited a Harbor Farmz cannabis processing facility, which had been previously considered as a potential data center site. This earlier proposal had led to a community meeting where residents voiced significant environmental and other impacts, prompting the city leaders to explore a moratorium.
