Pittsburg weighs moratorium on data centers
The Pittsburg City Council voted 4-0 to direct staff to prepare a 45-day moratorium on new data center development, including later phases of the AVAIO Perseus Data Center project. The council is expected to consider the moratorium on Oct. 26, while the project's first phase could continue.
The Pittsburg City Council voted 4-0 to direct city staff to draft a 45-day moratorium on new artificial intelligence data center development. The proposed pause would cover new projects and Phases II and III of the AVAIO Perseus Data Center at Pittsburg Technology Park, while Phase I could proceed.
The council is scheduled to consider the moratorium on Oct. 26. The action follows similar or proposed restrictions in other Bay Area jurisdictions, including San Mateo County, Oakland, San Francisco and Gilroy, as officials assess data centers' environmental and quality-of-life impacts and consider longer-term regulations.
