The Commonwealth of Virginia, often referred to as the data center capital, is seeing continued development, with the latest controversy surrounding a $3 billion hyperscale data center campus planned for 452 acres in Appomattox County. Economic Development Chairman Garrett Bösiger stated that the project, announced in December 2024 but in the works prior, would provide a tremendous boost to the tax base and create high-paying jobs. Bösiger defended the confidential negotiation process as necessary for economic development.
However, residents like Robin Foutz, who lives near the proposed site, voiced concerns about the loss of their area's peacefulness and a perceived lack of open communication throughout the decision-making process. Community members feel they were left in the dark and question whether the project is a short-term solution for a long-term economic issue. The Economic Development Authority and AVAIO Digital, the data center developer, are scheduled to host a public information session, although attendees will not be able to ask questions directly during the meeting, with submissions accepted afterward.
