Loudoun Supervisor Questions Data Center Substation Requirements
Loudoun County Supervisor Juli Briskman sought clarification on data center infrastructure, specifically regarding the need for multiple substations. It was explained that data centers often require two substations, a switching and a distribution substation, which typically share a footprint due to high-voltage power demands.
Loudoun County Supervisor Juli Briskman recently inquired about the infrastructure requirements for data centers, specifically whether each facility necessitates two substations. During a discussion, an unnamed expert clarified that in many data center projects, high-voltage lines typically at 230 kV feed into a switching substation, which then supplies a distribution substation.
While technically two distinct entities, these switching and distribution substations are often co-located, appearing as a single facility. They frequently abut each other and may even share a fence and overall footprint to efficiently manage the intense energy demands inherent in modern data center operations.
