Petersburg Borough Assembly to consider appeal, budget adjustments, data center-related items today
The Petersburg Borough Assembly is considering a proposed nine-month moratorium on permits for data centers that exceed the local electrical grid’s capacity or do not use closed-loop cooling systems. The Assembly will also consider directing staff to draft zoning regulations for data centers, which are not currently addressed in borough code.
The Petersburg Borough Assembly is scheduled to consider a proposed nine-month pause on data center permitting. Vice Mayor Jeigh Stanton Gregor’s proposal would apply to facilities that cannot operate within Petersburg’s electrical-grid capacity or that lack closed-loop cooling systems, and would restrict on-site power generation while the borough studies potential impacts and additional regulations.
Assembly member Jeff Meucci is separately asking the borough manager to prepare data center regulations for Petersburg’s zoning code. The borough currently has no specific data center provisions. Before the regular meeting, the Board of Adjustment is also set to review an appeal by Tidal Network, the broadband company of the Central Council of Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, over a denied subdivision request for a communications tower near the Petersburg fire hall.
