The Governor's order specifically directs ERCOT and the PUCT to ensure that all data centers comply with self-reporting requirements concerning their electricity and water usage. According to ERCOT, if all current data center projects were approved, their collective electrical demand could exceed five times Texas's record peak for electrical demand, a scenario that is raising alarms about the reliability of the state's power grid. Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, a critic of the Governor's handling of these issues, has urged Governor Abbott to go further by calling for a special legislative session.
