The proposed plans include nearly 250 new data centers across Texas, with 56 specifically in Central Texas. This surge has led to significant statewide backlash, prompting Texas Governor Greg Abbott to pivot his stance. Once a proponent of Texas as an AI development hub, Governor Abbott is now prioritizing industry regulation, proposing to repeal data center sales tax exemptions and other incentives, and even suggesting an outright ban on data center development in rural neighborhoods.
Nelson's hometown, Abbott, is located in Hill County, which recently experienced its own data center controversy. The county initially passed a one-year data center moratorium on construction in unincorporated areas in May. However, this moratorium was short-lived, as a developer filed a $100 million lawsuit against the county in June. Hill County commissioners unanimously ended the moratorium and, in July, settled the lawsuit by agreeing to pay $100,000 in attorney's fees and adopting a revised industrial development review policy. Other Texas cities, such as San Marcos, have also implemented citywide data center bans through zoning laws. Nexus Data Centers is mentioned as having a planned campus about 25 miles from Abbott in Hubbard.
