Champaign County Board members can no longer sign NDAs regarding county business
The Champaign County Board unanimously adopted an ordinance barring board members from signing most nondisclosure agreements involving county business. It also approved a resolution prohibiting county property-tax abatements for hyperscale data centers, while an existing moratorium on data centers on undeveloped county-owned land remains in effect through April 2027.
The Champaign County Board unanimously barred its members from signing nondisclosure agreements concerning county business, except for confidential information and legal settlements. District 3 Republican John Farney, who led the effort, said the measure was intended to strengthen transparency in county government.
The action followed backlash over an NDA signed by Mahomet officials and Clean Cloud Energy, a data center developer, after which the village ended discussions with the company. The county board also approved a resolution preventing hyperscale data center developers from receiving abatements on the county portion of property taxes. An earlier moratorium on data center development on undeveloped county-owned land remains in place until April 2027.
